Most traditional prescription drugs mask the symptoms of a disease but often they do not address the root cause.

That is why pharmaceuticals often provide temporary relief of symptoms, but the skin condition itself doesn’t seem to go away.

Herbal medicines do the exact opposite, they aim to resolve the root cause.  In doing so, the issue AND the related symptoms disappear. This results in skin stability and thus, lasting change. To accomplish this, herbal formulas address all the contributing factors that affect your skin, such as: your basic constitution, environment, lifestyle, diet, and psychological well-being. Every formula is customized to work with your unique skin presentation.

The same skin condition presents differently for each person because the ratio of contributing factors varies.

That’s why your Amethyst herbalist will spend time, upfront, asking a lot of questions about your health history and lifestyle. Once we determine all the elements of your skin’s story, we then choose ingredients that will solve YOUR combination of issues. As your skin condition heals, your herbal formula will change to address what your skin needs at each phase of healing.

Herbal medicines treat your skin condition from the inside, out.

After the initial intake, we usually see patients 2-4 weeks afterward for the next appointment. Since we strive for lasting change, the number of appointments will depend upon what needs to change in you, internally. Typically, we see patients every 2 weeks. This way, we can 1) monitor how your skin (and body) is responding to the herbal formula and 2) determine if your herbal formula needs revising to continue the healing process.

As a rule of thumb, acute conditions typically resolve more quickly (a few weeks) while longstanding chronic issues will probably need more time (months). When we first begin treatment, sometimes it takes a few weeks to find the right combination of ingredients that work for your constitution and presentation since all formulas are customized and no two are alike. Once we find that right combination and you are taking your herbal formula consistently as directed, you should see changes and improvement with each subsequent week of herbal formula treatment. There are likely to be changes and tweaks to your formula as the condition resolves and your skin needs different ingredients to continue healing.  Be prepared to work with your practitioner as a team throughout the process. Communication will be your skin’s best friend!

Your Amethyst Herbalist will recommend a daily dosage of herbal formula until your skin completely resolves and sometimes, for a period of time afterward to ensure your skin’s stability.

INTERNAL LIQUID FORMULA: These herbs are prepared and placed in vacuum-packed individual dosages that look like (large) soy sauce packets from a Chinese restaurant. Patients typically take 2 vacuum packs per day.  

TOPICAL HERBAL FORMULAS will be recommended to treat the skin from both the inside and out.  These herbal formulas can come in the form of oils or cremes and are applied 3-6x’s/daily as necessary.

Initial Dermatology Intake/Appointment:  $250

During your first appointment, we will review your completed New Patient forms to better understand all the contributing factors to your skin condition. The practitioner will examine and take pictures of your skin, develop a treatment plan, prescribe a customized herbal formula and set up a check-up appointment.

Dermatology Check-Up: $125

During each check-up appointment, the practitioner will re-examine and take new pictures of your skin to determine progress. As your skin evolves, your herbal formula will be adjusted to promote continued healing. Therefore, expect to see the practitioner every 2-3 weeks until your skin resolves.

Herbal Formulas: approximately $70-100/week

Most patients find that their herbal formulas cost approximately $70-100/week. This is an average number, which can be higher or lower depending on numerous factors and does not include shipping costs and taxes. Once your skin has stabilized and healed completely, you should not have to take herbal formulas any further.

Please note: Insurance does not currently recognize herbal medicine. However, many companies will allow patients to use flexible spending/health spending accounts to cover herbal appointment and formula charges.  Herbal formulas may be subject to shipping costs and taxes.
